A stucco wall is only as good as what is behind it. On new installs in PLACEHOLDER City we start at the weather-resistive barrier, lap it correctly, install the lath and the accessories, and only then start putting mud on the wall. That order is not a preference, it is what keeps water moving down and out instead of sideways into the sheathing.

PLACEHOLDER Stucco Co. has been running traditional three-coat systems in PLACEHOLDER County for 21+ years. We are locally owned, we do not sub the plastering out to whoever is available that week, and the crew lead who scopes your job is on site when the finish coat goes on.

What a three-coat stucco system actually includes

Three-coat, sometimes called hard coat or traditional stucco, is a cement plaster system applied in layers over metal lath. The scratch coat keys into the lath and gets raked horizontally. The brown coat is floated flat and true and is where the wall gets its plane. The finish coat carries the color and the texture. Total thickness over lath runs about 7/8 inch, which is the number an inspector will be looking for.

Underneath all of that sits the drainage plane: two layers of building paper or an approved WRB, weep screed set at least 4 inches above grade or 2 inches above paving, casing bead at every opening, and control joints laid out so no single panel gets oversized. Skip any of it and the wall will tell on you within a couple of seasons.

Finish textures we run

Texture is the part homeowners actually see, so we bring samples and let you look at them on your own wall in daylight before we commit. Sand and float finishes are the most forgiving over large elevations. Dash and lace read busier and hide patchwork well. Smooth and Santa Barbara finishes look sharp but show every imperfection in the brown coat, so they cost more in labor for a reason.

  • Sand finish — fine, medium or coarse aggregate, the most common residential choice
  • Lace and skip trowel — hides substrate movement and blends well on repairs
  • Dash — sprayed on, extremely durable, common on older housing stock
  • Smooth and Santa Barbara — flat, modern, unforgiving of a bad brown coat
  • Worm, swirl and cat face — texture patterns for matching existing neighborhood homes

How we schedule an install around local weather

Cement plaster cures with water, not by drying out, so timing matters more here than most trades admit. We watch overnight lows, wind and direct sun before we schedule a finish coat, and we moist-cure the brown coat when conditions call for it. Rushing that step is the single most common reason a new wall in the PLACEHOLDER Valley ends up with hairline map cracking that nobody can trowel out later.

What an install costs and what drives the number

Square footage is only the starting point. Wall height and access decide how much scaffolding goes up. The number of windows, doors and returns decides how much accessory and detail labor is in the bid. Whether you are going over open frame, over block, or over a demolished older system changes the material list entirely. We measure the elevations, count the openings and give you a written scope so you can compare our bid line for line against anyone else in PLACEHOLDER City.

On a typical single-family home, lath and scratch run a day or two, the brown coat goes on after that, and the finish coat follows once the brown coat has cured. Most residential installs in PLACEHOLDER City run one to two weeks start to finish depending on weather and square footage.
